Why a Hardware-Store Copy Will Not Start Your Car

Inside the plastic head of almost every modern car key is a transponder — a passive chip with no battery that wakes up from the magnetic field of a coil around the ignition barrel. Turn the key and the car asks a question; the chip answers with a rolling value; the engine control unit either enables fuel and spark or does not. Cut the blade alone and you have a key that turns the lock and cranks the starter while the car refuses to run, which is exactly the symptom people describe when they call us after a cheap copy.

That is the immobiliser doing its job. It is also why programming, not cutting, is the real work on an automotive key. Cutting a blade takes a couple of minutes on a machine; teaching the vehicle to accept a new chip depends entirely on how that manufacturer built its security, and the range runs from a thirty-second onboard sequence to a procedure that requires a security code pulled from the vehicle identification number and a mandatory waiting period the car enforces itself.

The four generations you will meet

Plain mechanical keys, still found on older trucks and on trunk and glovebox locks. Transponder keys, from the late 1990s onward, where a chip must be learned. Remote head keys, which fold the lock, unlock and panic buttons into the same key head and add a battery and a separate rolling-code radio. Proximity fobs, which stay in your pocket while the car senses them and a button starts the engine. Each of those is a different part, a different price and a different programming path — and a shop that quotes you a price before knowing which one you have is guessing.

Push-to-Start and Proximity Fobs

A proximity system runs low-frequency antennas around the cabin and in the door handles. The car pings, the fob answers, and if the answer is right the doors unlock and the start button becomes live. The emergency blade hidden inside almost every proximity fob exists because that radio link can fail — pull the blade out and there is a real lock cylinder in the driver's door, usually behind a small cap you can lever off.

The single most common proximity complaint is not a dead fob but a dead coin cell. A fob with a weak battery still opens the door when held against the start button or the steering column, because most vehicles have a backup induction coil for exactly that situation. If your car only starts when the fob touches a particular spot, replace the cell before you replace anything else.

Fobs that are lost versus fobs that are broken

These are different jobs with different costs. A broken fob you still have can often be repaired — cracked cases, snapped emergency blades and worn button pads are all replaceable, and the electronics inside are frequently fine. A lost fob means a new part programmed to your car, and on most vehicles it also means erasing every previously learned fob so the missing one stops working. That erase step is the part people forget to ask for, and it is the whole security value of the visit.

If you have lost one of two fobs, bring the surviving one to the appointment. Many systems will only add a key when a working key is present, and having it can turn a long procedure into a short one.

Spare Keys Are Cheaper Than Lost Keys

The gap between cutting a spare while you still have a working key and replacing an all-keys-lost vehicle is the largest gap in this trade. With a working key present, most vehicles will learn a second key through an onboard sequence in minutes. With no key at all, the job starts with gaining entry, then reading the immobiliser data or deriving a security code, then a manufacturer-enforced wait on many models before the car will accept anything new.

Coastal humidity gives you a second reason. A single key carried on a keyring every day gets worn by the ignition, corroded by salt air and eventually snaps at the shoulder where the blade meets the head. A spare cut from a fresh key rather than from a worn one is cut to the correct depths; a spare cut from an already-worn key copies the wear, which is how people end up with two keys that both stick.

Keys Locked in the Car

The tools for opening a locked vehicle are wedges that create a small gap at the top of the door frame and a long reach tool that operates the interior handle or unlock button. Done properly it leaves nothing behind. Done badly it creases the door frame, tears the weather seal, or triggers a side curtain airbag on the vehicles where the sensor sits in the door — which is why we do not encourage anyone to attempt it with a coat hanger.

Before we touch a vehicle we confirm you are entitled to be in it. Registration, insurance paperwork or identification matching the vehicle records is normal, and we will ask for it politely every single time. A locksmith who does not ask is a locksmith who would open your car for somebody else.

One thing worth knowing: on a vehicle with a working proximity fob locked inside, some manufacturers refuse to let the doors lock at all, and others will unlock automatically if the fob is detected in the cabin after locking. If your car has that feature and the doors locked anyway, the fob battery is probably dead — which changes what the fix is.

Motorcycles, Trailers, Boats and Powersports

Motorcycle keys are their own discipline. Many bikes use a small high-security blade cut on both edges, and many carry an immobiliser chip in the head just as cars do. Ignition switches on bikes live outdoors and take weather directly, so a bike key that has started to feel notchy is usually a corroded switch rather than a worn key.

Boat trailers and utility trailers around here run on coupler locks and receiver pins that live in salt spray, and those seize far more often than they are picked. If a trailer lock has not moved in a season, penetrating oil and patience beat force. Personal watercraft and outboard ignition keys are usually simple mechanical blanks, and we can cut those from a code or from an existing key.

What We Need From You Before the Truck Rolls

Year, make, model and the vehicle identification number. The VIN is visible through the windscreen on the driver's side and printed on the door jamb sticker, and it is what tells us which of the several key variants your car actually uses — trim level and build month genuinely change the answer on some models.

Tell us whether you have any working key at all, how many keys were originally issued, and whether the vehicle has ever had its immobiliser or head unit replaced. A previously replaced module is the one thing most likely to turn a routine job into a long one, and knowing in advance means we arrive with the right equipment.

Programming Methods, and Why Your Car Matters More Than Your Locksmith

There are three broad ways a vehicle learns a new key, and which one applies is decided by the manufacturer, not by us. The first is an onboard procedure: a sequence of ignition cycles, door switches or pedal presses that puts the car into a learn mode, done entirely from the driver's seat. It is fast and it usually requires at least one key that already works.

The second is through the diagnostic port under the dashboard, using equipment that speaks the manufacturer's own security protocol. This is what makes an all-keys-lost job possible on most modern vehicles, and it is where the security code — often derived from the vehicle identification number — comes into play. Some manufacturers gate that code behind a registered locksmith account, which is a good thing: it is the same control that stops anyone with a laptop pairing a key to your car.

The third is working on the immobiliser module directly, which is a bench job and the last resort. It comes up on older vehicles with a failed module, or where a previous owner had a module swapped and the replacement never got matched properly to the car.

The security delay nobody warns you about

A number of manufacturers build a deliberate waiting period into the key-learning process on an all-keys-lost job — the car simply refuses to proceed for a fixed period with the ignition on. It is not a fault and it cannot be skipped. If a technician tells you the job will take an hour of sitting in your driveway doing nothing visible, that is what is happening, and it is the vehicle protecting itself exactly as designed.

This is also the reason a quote for a second key and a quote for a replacement of the last key are so far apart. The parts may be identical. The procedure is not.

Automotive Key Questions

The hardware store cut me a key and it turns but the car will not start. Why?
The blade is right and the chip is missing or unprogrammed. Your car's immobiliser has to recognise a transponder before it will enable fuel and spark. We can add the chip and program it to your vehicle, and in many cases the key you already had cut can be reused.
Do you need my car towed to you?
No. We work at the vehicle. Automotive key work is done from the truck at your home, your workplace or wherever the car is sitting, which avoids a tow bill on a car that is otherwise perfectly healthy.
I lost the only key I had. Is that a much bigger job?
Yes, noticeably. With no working key we have to gain entry, read or derive the vehicle's security data, and on many models wait out a manufacturer-enforced security delay before the car will accept a new key. If you still have one working key, tell us — it usually makes the job far shorter.
Will programming a new fob stop my old lost one from working?
It should, and you should ask for it. On most vehicles we can erase all previously learned keys and re-learn only the ones physically in your hand. That is what makes a lost fob harmless, and it is the part of the job that actually protects the car.
My fob only works when I hold it against the start button. Is it dead?
Almost certainly just the coin cell. Most push-to-start vehicles have a backup induction coil at the start button or the steering column for exactly this case. Replace the battery before assuming the fob has failed.
Can you cut a spare for my motorcycle?
Usually. Many bikes use a double-sided high-security blade and some carry an immobiliser chip in the head. Tell us the make, model and year and whether the current key has a plastic head with a chip in it, and we will confirm before we come out.
